Meaningful loading screen/ video intro mashup
http://www.nokia.com/nonstopliving
A loading screen that also gives a meaningful preview of and orientation to site content. Is the Flash intro coming back from the dead in a form we can all live with?

Great use of hiding the unnecessary
Magnum Photos has created a very beautiful interface for browsing their photos. Details like the full list of total images or the credits are hidden until rollover.

Parental controls fail usability test
In a new parental controls study by User Centric, parents were asked to set up parental controls for 4 devices.
FINDINGS
- Failure rates were high: 31% (DVR), 36% (mobile phone), 42% (V-Chip), and 47% (game console). Across all four devices, parents and children had similar failure rates when setting up parental controls. Participants who reported prior experience fared no better than those who had no experience.
- One third of participants failed to set up parental controls across all the devices. This contrasted sharply with the high confidence ratings given by participant; many participants believed they had successfully activated parental controls when they actually had not.
- Several participants failed to set up parental controls because they were unaware that they had to perform an extra step to save and then activate their selection. Parental control interfaces failed to provide sufficient visual cues on whether a specific rating was successfully selected or automatically saved as the current setting.

Parents worry about Web but don't stop kids' use
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Most U.S. parents said their children had encountered "issues" like bad language, sex or advertising online over the past year, but they are not stopping their kids' Internet use, according to a new study.
A survey by market researcher Harris Interactive of 411 parents of children aged between 6-18 who use the Internet found 71 percent admitted their child had encountered at least "one issue" with the Internet within the past year.
But four out of five parents said the Internet helped their children in school and only three in 10 parents -- or 31 percent -- said their children spent too much time online.

Game Mechanic: Drawing
A good example of this mechanic is Out of Your Mind. The point of OOYM is to lasso the bad guys. More points are awarded if users catch multiple baddies in a single lasso.
I would guess that the popularity of this style of game is due to the popularity of the Nintendo DS and its pen/touchscreen interaction.
Game Mechanic: Tower Defense
This style of game is popping up all over the place. They are all based on Desktop Tower Defense
